"Our achievement in taking on the number one server position in Australia is indicative of strong interest in enterprise consolidation and virtualisation platforms as well as the growth of Solaris. We've also had huge success in adoption of our energy efficient technologies", said Gary Kelly, head of Sun's systems practice for Australia and New Zealand.

"Driven by power, cooling and space considerations, this trend has resulted in a resurgence of the high-end of the market where Sun is particularly strong," said Kelly.

"Many companies, Sun included, are aware of the need to reduce their carbon emissions, move to more environmentally sustainable business practices and green the data centre. We have seen significant growth in our UltraSPARC T1- based systems which produce less energy than a household light bulb," said Kelly. "Sun's historical and continued investment in eco innovation enables our customers to significantly cut energy consumption in the data centre."

"Sun has also witnessed increased adoption of its Solaris 10 operating system, an open source offering with enterprise class reliability and built-in virtualisation and consolidation capabilities. Global downloads of Solaris 10 are more than 7 million and local uptake represents 2 per cent of this number," said Kelly.

On a year-on-year basis, total server spending increased 19.2 per cent in Q2 2007 in Asia/Pacific (ex. Japan), according to the IDC Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server Tracker, Q2 2007, August 2007. In the ANZ region, overall server spending grew 28.4 per cent year-on-year in Q2 2007, which was the highest among the four sub-regions: ANZ, Greater China, ASEAN & India and Korea.
