(NASDAQ: SUNW) today announced Sun (SM) Managed Operations for Storage, a new management service that strengthens Sun's ability to provide customers flexibility and choice in their management of heterogeneous disk and tape storage. With Sun Managed Operations for Storage, customers can reduce storage management costs, improve their quality of storage performance and increase efficiency of storage usage.

About Sun Managed Operations for Storage Sun's new Managed Operations for Storage brings together the innovation, technical expertise, process capabilities and tools from Sun's recent StorageTek (TM) and SevenSpace acquisitions. The combined storage services portfolio from both companies, combined with the service level management capabilities from Sun, deliver a powerful combination for customers.

Sun Managed Operations for Storage is a subset of the Sun Managed Operations portfolio. The new services will extend disk array, tape library and data management service options for new and existing Sun customers.

Through Sun Managed Operations for Storage, customers will be able to: Lower storage management staffing costs and scaling problems Decrease storage resource management software licensing and integration costs Increase application, database and transaction performance through proactive response, reporting, on-time provisioning and storage allocation Decrease risk of data loss through 95 percent or higher backup success rates

There are three progressive levels of service (each increased service level builds on the lower service level) for Sun Managed Operations for Storage including:

  • Storage Monitoring: designed to provide customers with storage administrator assistance and provide virtually round the clock, weekend and holiday monitoring and alerting as well as unified reporting and trending.
  • Storage Management: takes over day-to-day storage administration activities from problem resolution to provisioning and technical analysis.
  • Storage and Data Management: provides complete tools and reporting to analyze and improve data lifecycle management, storage management workflow and capacity planning.
